Beverly Hills Dental FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How can cosmetic dentistry help me?

Cosmetic dentistry can enhance the health and beauty of your smile and mouth. To achieve the highest level of aesthetics it is of utmost importance we first make sure your gums and supporting bone are healthy. It is also important we make sure there is no decay in your teeth. Once a solid foundation has been achieved by our Beverly Hills implant dentist, restorative dentist or cosmetic dentist, Dr. Glosman, then beautiful restorations such as veneers and all ceramic crowns and inlays can be placed. Using these restorations will give you a more beautiful and youthful smile, literally taking years off your appearance.

Why go to a cosmetic dentist?

The difference between a cosmetic dentist and general dentist is the level of training, experience and focus of the doctors practice. In cosmetic dentistry, we focus primarily on restoring a worn and broken down dentition. We rebuild and enhance people's smiles with smile makeover, implants, veneers and all ceramic restorations to make sure there's a harmony between form, function and beauty. Typically a cosmetic dentist will refer to a sub-specialist to handle specific issues with the gums, root canals, extractions and implants, so that the patient will achieve the most superior aesthetics.

I have a lot of metal fillings, can they be colored white without having to replace them?

The simple answer is no. The silver fillings are an amalgamation of various metals. These metals are gray in color and cannot be masked. With time they also stain the natural tooth and give it a grayish color. The only way to make them less noticeable is to remove them completely and replace them with healthier alternative, an all porcelain restoration.

What is a porcelain veneer?

A veneer by definition is a thin layer of material applied to another material superficially, to give it a pleasing appearance. A porcelain veneer is bonded to the front of a natural tooth. The veneer can be as thin as a contact lens, but when bonded to the front a tooth, it becomes as strong as the natural tooth. From the perspective that you were not born with veneers, then yes they are fake. However, if done properly by a well-trained dentist and a master ceramist, a veneer can look and feel very real.

Does cosmetic dentistry hurt?

Like anything we do to ourselves if it's done right, with enough planning, foresight, and a gentle touch cosmetic dentistry will not hurt. The best way to know is by interviewing your doctor and talking to his/her patients. Talking to existing patients is the gateway into understanding if you will have potential discomfort or not.

What is the best way to whiten my teeth?

This is a personal decision that must be made by each person. Remember whitening is not a permanent treatment. In office whitening can be done every 6-12 months, and maintained at home with bleaching trays. At home bleaching can be done as the primary type of bleaching or just as an adjunctive boost to keep the color you like. You can bleach before a special event or before you take any type of photos to achieve a whiter and brighter smile. Most importantly, remember that whitening is not a solution for certain types of problems such as tetracycline staining and darkening of the teeth from aging.
